How to Choose a Birthday Party Magician in Singapore: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Choosing a birthday party magician in Singapore can feel tricky. Lots of magicians say they're "the best", but a great show for a 4-year-old looks very different from one for a 10-year-old. A few good questions before you book will tell you who fits your party.
As a multi-award-winning kids party magician who performs at birthday parties all over Singapore and has performed in 7 other countries, I get asked these questions by parents every week.
Here are the 10 I'd ask if I were booking a magician for my own child's party.

1. Will the magician I book be the one who actually performs?
Always ask this first. Some companies take your booking and then send whichever performer is free that day. Ask for the performer's name and check their photos and videos.
At Magic of Markson, I perform every show personally. The magician you see on this website is the magician who turns up at your party.
2. Is the show suited to my child's age?
A good magician changes the show for the audience. Toddlers need bright colours, simple surprises and lots of chances to shout and clap. Children aged 7 to 12 want tricks that really fool them, plus jokes that don't feel babyish.
Tell the magician the birthday child's age and the age range of the guests. Then ask how the show will be adjusted for them.

3. Is there a live animal in the show?
For many kids, the highlight of a magic show is a real animal appearing. If the show has one, ask what animal it is, how it's handled and whether children can see or touch it.
My shows feature a live rabbit, which is why parents often book me for an animal magic show for kids.

4. How long is the show, and what else can be added?
Ask how long the magic show runs and what happens before and after it. Many parents like to add games hosting, balloon twisting or face painting so the kids stay busy for the whole party.
Booking these from one provider means one contact, one schedule and fewer things for you to coordinate.

5. How much space does the show need?
Most Singapore parties happen in a condo function room, an HDB flat, a void deck or a restaurant. Ask how much floor space the magician needs and whether a table or power point is required.
A good magician will tell you how to set up the room so every child can see.

6. Does the birthday child get a special part in the show?
The best birthday magic shows make the birthday child the star. Ask whether your child will help with a trick, get a special moment, or be honoured on stage. This is often the part that ends up in your favourite party photos!

7. What experience and awards does the magician have?
Look for real experience performing for children, not just adults. Ask about awards, years performing, and the kinds of events they've done.
I'm a multi-award-winning magician and have performed in Japan, Thailand, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and the Maldives, including for the Royal Family of Brunei.

8. How far ahead should I book?
Weekend afternoons fill up first, especially during school holidays and the year-end period. If your party date is fixed, enquire as early as you can.
Weekday or morning slots are often easier to get at shorter notice.
9. What if some kids are very young or shy?
Not every child wants to be pulled on stage. Ask how the magician handles shy children and very young guests.
An experienced kids magician will read the room, invite volunteers gently and never force a child to take part.

10. How do I get a quote?
Every party is different, so many magicians quote based on your date, location, number of children and the package you choose. Have these details ready when you enquire.
